No phone number
We never ask for one. We never collect one. Your place in Virexa Private is the name you reserved.
Built around a username
There is no phone number in Virexa Private. Your identity is a username — 3 to 30 letters, numbers, underscores, or hyphens. People find you by that name, not by a SIM card, and they are not notified when you add them to your people book.
Signup is three quiet steps. Reserve the username. Confirm you are 18 with a date of birth — name and bio stay optional. Verify once with email. That address receives a 6-digit code and is then discarded. It is not saved as part of your account.
Email used once
A one-time code proves you can receive mail. After that, the address is gone from Virexa Private.
18+ age check
Date of birth is required at signup so we can refuse anyone under 18. Name, bio, photo, and bubble color stay optional.
Password on the username
You sign back in with the username and password. No inbox is required to return.
Private messaging
Open a chat by looking up an exact username. Direct messages live in your chat list with unread counts, last message previews, and presence when someone is online. Typing indicators show when the other person is writing.
A conversation can hold more than text:
- Written messages, with a lock when the body was encrypted on this device
- Photos and videos, with a composer that lets you crop and draw before you send
- Files and attachments
- GIFs
- Voice notes recorded in the composer
- Emoji from the picker in the composer
Replies, edits, and deletes
Reply sits on the message, so the thread stays readable. You can edit or delete your own message for a short window — fifteen minutes after it was sent. Delete can be for you, or for everyone in that chat. Clear chat wipes the local thread when you want a clean slate.
Read receipts and last seen
Read receipts are on by default and can be turned off in You. Last seen can be everyone, only people you share with, everyone except a list, or no one. Status visibility uses the same kind of audience controls.
Groups
A group has a name, an optional description, and members. Roles include admin, moderator, and member. Plans, jokes, photos, and voice notes stay in one place. Group messages use the same encryption path as direct chats: the body is sealed on your device for every member who has a public key registered.
You can leave a group. Voice and video calls can start from a conversation, including groups, using the same calling overlay as a one-to-one chat.
People book
People is your book. Add someone by username, give them a nickname if you want, and open a chat when you are ready. Adding them does not ping them. Removing them does not send a notice either. Search filters the book by nickname, name, or username.
Block lives under You. A blocked person cannot keep the conversation going. Report is in the chat menu, with reasons for spam, harassment, hate speech, violence, misinformation, impersonation, and other — plus optional details and a link to the message if you choose to include it.
Status
Status is a 24-hour update, not a permanent feed. Text statuses pick a color and a line. They only reach people who are in each other’s book, and you can narrow that further with status privacy: everyone in the book, only share with, or everyone except. Read receipts are required if you want to see who viewed a status.
You — profile and presence
You is your space. Set a photo, a display name, and an about line (up to 139 characters), or tap a preset: Available, Sleeping, Out, Unavailable, Gym, Busy, At work. Choose a sent-message bubble color — purple, red, pink, black, grey, green, orange, or yellow — so your side of the chat feels like you.
Last seen, status visibility, and read receipts sit on the same screen. Sign out is there when you are done with this browser.
Calls, from the same chat
Voice and video start from the conversation header. Mute, camera off, and hang up live in the call overlay. Incoming calls ring in Virexa Private. Call events can also appear in the thread as a call log. Read the full calling story on the Video & Voice Calling page.
Notifications on the web
The web app can ask for browser notifications so a new message can reach you when the tab is in the background. You can allow or skip that prompt. Encrypted bodies stay sealed; a notification does not dump the plaintext into a public log.
Where you can use Virexa Private
Web is available now at web.virexaprivate.com. Windows is scheduled for October 29, 2026. Android and iOS are coming in 2027. The product is the same private space — username, locked chats, no stored email — on every surface we ship.
